In the past six years, my dogs and I have seen a lot of this country. I take a lot of photos when I travel and my favorites are usually the shots with my border collie mixes Bowie and Dio (short for D.O.G.). Without the dogs, it’s just a pretty picture, but with them it’s a place I’ve been, a place I know and love. From time to time I’ll post some of my favorite photos on here from my travels with Bowie and D.O.G. Today: Michigan’s UP!
Michigan is one of those states I never thought much about until I spent a summer living in Ann Arbor and discovered it’s an amazing place! The week-long trip I took up to the Upper Peninsula to research a Travels in Geology column for EARTH magazine remains one of my all time favorite regional road trips. The UP, especially the Shipwreck Coast of Lake Superior and the Porcupine Mountains, ranks among the wildest places in the lower 48. It’s certainly one of the most beautiful…

I’m beginning to feel like a broken record with the comments…but wow…what beautiful pictures again! What a joy it must have been to actually be there stream and lake-side. Thank you. 🙂
You’re welcome! The Porcupine Mountains should be on every backpacker’s wish list! Someday I’ll get back there for a longer trek. Those campsites on the shores of Lake Superior are amazing. And the park rents cabins- perfect for winter snowshoeing trips!
Well if I ever find myself in Michigan, I’ll certainly have to get out there…until then, though, I’ll enjoy it vicariously through your wonderful pictures. 😉
Well, now I must go there! Thanks for the great shots. I love that you take your dogs with you. And putting them in the pictures really gives a great perspective of how big and vast these places are! Thanks for taking us along too 🙂
